Engelse krant The Independent On Sunday heeft Londen afgelopen week uitgeroepen tot ‘the cocaine capital of the world' . Volgens de krant heeft het gebrek aan stigma van de drug ertoe geleid dat de drug op ieder maatschappelijk niveau met toenemende hoeveelheid wordt gesnoven. De krant interviewde Mixmag editor Nick Stevenson wiens krant afgelopen maand berichtte dat clubbers steeds vaker de pilen laten staan om aan de snats te gaan.Reden hiervoor is dat in vijf jaar tijd de prijs voor een gram coke is gedaald van 60 naar 30 Engelse pond. Mixmag's jaarlijkse drugonderzoek toonde ook aan dat van haar lezers één op de tien twee gram per sessie naar binnen snuift. Dat is al snel 40 lijntjes Colombiaans pretpoeder.
"This is not some dirty subculture, our readers are everyone who likes music, from students to civil servants," zei Nick Stevenson tegen de krant, "and the price means it's not just the preserve of rock stars".
Het verhaal in The Independent luidde ook een geamuseerde reactie in van Felix Buxton van Basement Jaxx, die naar eigen zeggen veel weet van de cokecultuur in clubland. "How can they call London the cocaine capital of the world? All that means is that the journalists are thinking; ‘all our friends do coke so it must be so'," lachtte Felix.
"Generally I've noticed that as far as the music industry is concerned it's usually the hangers-on who are doing coke; the great artists and people really doing things often don't seem to do any drugs at all," vervolgde Buxton. "I've done coke very occasionally but I remember taking it once years and years ago, going out and meeting a girl I'd been seeing and behaving like a complete wanker to her," herinnert Felix zich.
"When I got home I just thought to myself I don't like the way I just was'. I was terrible to her, I was really mocking another human being and for what? The reality was that taking cocaine didn't make me feel good, it just made me feel really shallow which is a basic coke thing. Sure it keeps you up and alert but I think it's a wanker drug. It's not good for the soul and that's why I don't do it."
