Noem de dancegenres house, trance, techno, breakbeat ,jungle, hardcore en downtempo en iedere liefhebber weet waarover je praat. Maar wat is nu precies het verschil tussen Noizecore, Terrorcor, Speedcore, Metalcore en Digital? Wel eens van IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) gehoord? Waarin kun je Drum 'n Bass en Neurofunk onderscheiden?
Op al deze vragen en meer weet de site Ishkurs Guide to Electronic Music antwoord. Verwacht geen saaie uiteenzettingen over beats per minute of droge teksten over ieder denkbaar subgenre. Ishkur, oftewel Canadees Kenneth John Taylor, steekt met zichtbaar plezier de draak met genres en personen.
Alle dancesoorten worden vergezeld van een aantal geluidsfragmenten. Het commentaar van Taylor maakt het helemaal af.
Over Gabber House: "Holy shit is this ever cheesy. What is this even doing in Hardcore? This is the cheesiest cheese that you will ever cheese on. Even the cheese of the cheese who make this cheese are cheesy. The cheesiest of cheesy cheeses abound. It's cheesy even for euro cheese. Most wouldn't even cheese this cheese. Absolute cheese cheese." Ter verklaring: Behalve kaas-achtig betekent cheesy in het Engels ook zoiets als flauw, kneuterig, lamlendig.
Over Trance: "As a good friend of mine once said: "Come on. Get on with it already. I can only hold my arms in the air for so long." Somehow, a mutant form of trance evolved from Epic drenched itself in the breakdown-build-anthem formula and senselessly driven it to new, insane levels of assinine. In doing so, it stopped becoming trance. Some songs have ridiculously long and drawn out breakdowns, lasting well over 3 minutes or almost half the length of the entire fucking track. Each new release tries to outdo last week's hit anthem, reaching higher and higher, making the genre louder, fuller, and more exalted and grandiose. Good god, does this ever suck. It's bombastic melodrama; a pompous, over-the-top, monstrously grotesque caricature of what trance used to be. The final betrayal. Trance is dead. Ferry Corsten killed it."
Voor Goa heeft Taylor nog enigszins een goed woordje over: "For what it's worth, the only trance genre that still has some integrity left. It's terrific stuff, if all the annoying, superficial hindu and buddhist iconography doesn't annoy the hell out of you. Goa would be the best genre ever, if it weren't for the fucking hippies."
Ook een leuke vondst: Drum 'n Bass is Jungle Lite of Diet Jungle. Over rap houdt hij het kort: "Rap was invented bij Blondie." Nooit geweten.
Bij een ambitieus project als het zijne, zijn er altijd mensen langs de zijlijn die het beter denken te weten. De dancedeskundige zegt hierover in een discussie: "Y'know, half of me wants to say "fuck off", and half of me wants to say "did you really go through the entire thing with a fine-tooth comb looking for errors? How fucking long did that take?" and half of me wants to say "Get a fucking life" and half of me wants to say "I'll change it when I god damn feel like changing it."
Taylor ziet ook in dat zijn levenswerk nooit helemaal volledig en af zal zijn. Hij zegt dan ook: "This is going to be big. Much much bigger than me. It will cost me my life. And I will break both my arms in the process." Als dat er voor nodig is, dan moet dat maar.
